Just for fun: get a ZX Spectrum emulator and for it, load up the game, and caghne emulation speed to 200%. Surprise: the Out Run port actually becomes a smooth, very playable game.In other words: the code US Gold released would require a hypothetical twice-as-powerful Spectrum, running at 7 Mhz instead of 3.5, to be a decent, enjoyable game. This should tell you something.

The Open Source Papilio One 500K FPGA board is a powerful and flexible platform that provides the core for exciting projects such as the Papilio Arcade. It acts as the empty canvas that classic arcade motherboards can be recreated on. Its flexible nature means that it can be re-used with future Papilio projects by simply purchasing the MegaWing portion of a project.

* Xilinx Spartan 3E XC3S500E FPGA with 500 thousand gates.
* 48 bidirectional I/O lines.
* Two channel USB connection for JTAG and serial communications implemented with [[http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/DataSheets/DS_FT2232D.pdf|FT2232D]].
